The Commissioner General of Uganda Prisons, Dr Johnson Byabashaija, and the British High Commissioner to Uganda, His Excellency Martin Shearman on 02 September visited the sight of works at Luzira Prisons and unveiled a plaque commemorating the assistance from the United Kingdom government to the Uganda Prison Services.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has extended financial assistance to the Uganda Prison Services in the form of a fund worth approximately $400,000 to rehabilitate the prisons at Luzira.

This work will consist mainly of the building of a new wing at Women’s prisons, Upgrading of Upper and Women’s prisons water and sanitation systems, and repairs to the Women’s administrative block, the Women’s clinic, the Upper prisons kitchen and several accommodation blocks. There are various other works to be carried out over the next 5-6 months, which include installation of a new boiler system to the Upper prison kitchen, which feeds more than 2000 prisons daily.

The humanitarian fund to the Prisons has been in the planning stage for several months, and the visit marks the start of the major works.
