Areas we cover
The High Commission is divided into sections; each dedicated to distinct area of work and is directed by the FCO's Departmental Strategic Objectives.
Political Section
The Political section is responsible for political relations between the UK and Uganda. The UK is committed to a strong partnership with Uganda and plays a positive role in the country's political and economic development.
We provide information, analysis and advice on political and economic developments in Uganda.
We liase with the Ugandan authorities on issues of concern to the British Government.
We organise visits to Uganda by members of the Royal Family, British Ministers and senior officials, MPs and other VIPs.
The UK and Uganda work together in areas such as international law, human rights, good governance, and democracy.
Communications Section
Our aim is to show how Britain is a long-standing, reliable and valuable partner of Uganda in all areas. We also seek to promote Britain as modern, dynamic, multicultural, caring, innovative and technologically advanced.
We provide information about Britain to the Ugandan media. We organise press conferences, press interviews and issue press releases on newsworthy events/issues, and provide the Ugandan media with articles and photographs of general interest on the UK.
We distribute publications, posters and CD-ROMs on various aspects of the UK to Ugandans who may find them of interest, including government officials, academics, NGOs and schools.
We answer general enquiries from members of the public about the UK. Occasionally we organise events designed to get some of our key messages across to wider audience.
We run the British Chevening Scholarship Programme for Uganda, and oversee other programme and project funds available to the High Commission.
Defence Section
The Defence section is responsible for all aspects of defence relationships between the UK and Uganda.
Consular Section
Assistance work
We assist British Nationals in difficulty - this includes those in hospital, those who have been arrested, and those who have been assaulted or robbed. We are also able to assist friends and relations if a British citizen dies in Uganda. We help British citizens who are resident here and those visiting the country. We make hospital and prison visits.
Passport and birth/death registration work
In 2007, our staff issued 345 British passports, registered 2 births and 2 deaths.
The High Commission attach importance to our relations with the British community in Uganda, and support such organisations as the British Residents Association and the Caledonian, St George's and St Patrick's Societies.
Visa Section
Ugandans need visas to go to, or through, the UK. We issued over 7,500 visas in 2007. Our visas operation is outsourced and all applications are lodged at our partner organisation, Visa Application Centre.
Management Section
To enable the rest of the High Commission to do its work, Management section provides support services. The section's aims are customer service and value-for-money.
The section is responsible for the employment of over 50 locally-engaged staff and for matters like staff welfare, security, accommodation, maintenance and furniture, transport, payment of accounts, IT and communications systems.
Trade and investment Section
Our services to business include advice and introductions. We support British exporters, joint ventures and two-way investment. British business visitors, the majority from small and medium-sized companies new to Ugandan market, call at the High Commission for market information and assistance.
Bilateral programme budget Section (PBP)
The High Commission holds a small Bilateral Programme Budget. From this budget we aim to support small projects in Uganda that strengthen the bilateral relationship between the UK and Uganda. Projects funded must work to support our High Commission objectives and the FCO's Department Strategic Objectives.
